Things to Do in Metamora IL This Fall Beyond the Square

Ask most Metamora residents what a fall Saturday looks like around here, and they'll point you to the Square. That's fair. It's where Old Settlers fills the block every June, where Friday Night Concerts ran through July, where Trunk or Treat lines up costumes every October. But check the actual calendar for September 26, 2026, and something different shows up: Jack's Pack 5th Annual 5K Run kicks off at 8 a.m. at Metamora Fields, and Lanterns on the Lake starts at 12:30 p.m. at 725 Seven Hills Road. Same Saturday, two addresses, neither one on the Square.

That's not a scheduling accident. It's a pattern that says something real about how this town's calendar actually works, and once you see it, you stop missing half of what's on offer.

How Square Events Are Approved

The Village of Metamora publishes its own events page. If you want to hold an event downtown or on the Square, you need Village approval, filed at least 30 days out, with a certificate of liability insurance naming the Village as an additional insured.

So the Square gets the marquee dates: Old Settlers in June, Meet Your Heroes on the first Saturday of September, Trunk or Treat the Saturday before Halloween, and the tree lighting in December. The 5K runs, tasting-room open houses, and school fundraisers happen away from the Square. Metamora Fields is private land. So is 725 Seven Hills Road. Jack's Pack 5th Annual 5K Run and Lanterns on the Lake fall on the same Saturday.

What Already Closed Out Summer

By the time you're reading this, the Square's summer chapter is done. Friday Night Concerts wrapped with the Brian Choban Jazz Quintet on July 31, and Dinner on the Bricks closed out July 29 with That Bald Guy and Gramma Nana's Kitchen handling the food. Meet Your Heroes, the Metamora Area Business Association's early-September tradition of first responders, inflatables, a pork chop cookout, and public health outreach, landed on its usual first Saturday slot and has already come and gone this month.

The Metamora Farmers Market is winding down too. It runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, but only June through September, which means the market on the Square has maybe two or three more Saturdays left before it closes for the season. If Saturday morning produce runs are part of your routine, this is the window, not next month.

The Saturday That Actually Does Double Duty

Here's where the two-track calendar gets interesting. September 26 isn't a conflict between two events competing for the same crowd. The timing doesn't overlap: Jack's Pack 5K starts at 8 a.m. at Metamora Fields, and Lanterns on the Lake doesn't get going until 12:30 p.m. across town at Seven Hills Road. A resident who treats the Square as the only calendar worth checking will catch neither. A resident who knows both are booked can run the 5K in the morning and still make the afternoon event without rushing.

That's the practical payoff of understanding why the calendar splits the way it does. It's not two competing draws. It's one full day, if you know where to look.

Where Residents Land When Nothing's on the Square

On an ordinary fall weekend, with no festival and no fundraiser on the calendar, two spots do most of the work for local plans, and neither is downtown.

Metamora Fields Restaurant sits inside the golf club's clubhouse at 801 Progress Street and stays open to the public even if you've never picked up a club. It runs Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., which makes it one of the few sit-down options in town that isn't tied to the Square's foot traffic.

Out on Coon Creek Road, Old Mill Vineyard's Bent Tree tasting room has quietly become the other default. Kurt and Donna Grohsmeyer planted the estate's vines back in 2005 and opened Bent Tree in October 2016, on a 10-acre spread with a pond that draws geese broods every year. It's open Friday through Sunday, and it's the kind of stop that doesn't show up on a downtown map because it isn't downtown. It's rural Metamora, a few minutes off the Square, and that's the point. Half the town's weekend answers live outside the Square's radius entirely.

The Rest of Fall, If You're Tracking It

Beyond September 26, a few more dates round out the season, some on the Square and others at venues elsewhere in town, all of them worth knowing if you want the full fall calendar instead of the half most people see:

• October 3 – Boys of Fall's "How Rude!" show at Black Partridge Park, the town's park with the hiking and biking trail mileage.
• October 17 – MGS PTO Craft & Vendor Show, hosted at Metamora Community Consolidated School District #1.
• Saturday before Halloween – Trunk or Treat returns to the Square, back on the permit-bound side of the calendar, with trick or treating, food trucks, and a costume contest.

Line those up against the Square's short list and the split becomes obvious. Four events away from the Square and three on it fall within about seven weeks. Together, these dates show how fall gatherings take place both on the Square and at venues elsewhere in town.
